How to Start Reading Water Margin
Read the early novel as linked entry stories rather than trying to memorize all 108 heroes. For each major figure, record the official or local pressure, the act that closes ordinary life, the helper or rival who appears, and what joining the outlaw network solves or makes worse.

Review one cause, one alliance, one cost, and one unresolved question before opening another character guide.
Follow entry causes before the full roster
The novel introduces its social world through careers breaking down: office, household, tavern, road, prison, monastery, and local authority. Record why a character can no longer return to the previous role.
Names become easier when attached to an irreversible choice rather than a list of nicknames.
Separate brotherhood from moral agreement
An oath or rescue can create loyalty without making every action just. Ask who receives protection, who pays the cost, and which conflict is postponed.
This keeps the outlaw community legible as both refuge and coercive system.
Use one support route at a time
Open a character page only when motive is unclear, a translation page when wording or edition structure blocks you, and a chapter summary when sequence is lost.
Return to the novel after one question is answered; support should not become a substitute narrative.
